Hermes BBS mailing list, by Michael Krause
A weekly publication!
April 16, Issue #1...
Preface:
Hello everyone, this is the first organized issue of the Hermes II
mailing list.
First things first, no Lloyd-bashing in this list. The reason is
simple, I don't want to see anyone have their access to the support
BBS burned because of this list.
So, back to what I was saying, this is the first week's issue.
Everyone, please submit your Hermes' tips. There isn't really much traffic
with the list, and *I* want to see it raise.
I need people to help me get new sysops on the mailing list, so
post messages to Hermes_Sysops (on Fido backbone), comp.sys.mac.comm,
alt.bbs, and other conferences informing them of the list, and making sure
all new members send applications to michael.krause@exchange.wariat.org. I
give thanks to all that help out.
Finally, I admit, I haven't spent much time with the list. But not
to worry, I will soon. I am publishing the yearly book (not yearbook, but a
literary book of 100 pages or so) for my school right now, so I am plagued
with busy-ness (business as they call it) lately.
This is the first issue, so enjoy reading, and send all comments
and suggestions to me. (michael.krause@exchange.wariat.org - check tag in
the back for more info...)
Primary New Externals This Week:
Merchant! 0.50b1 : 118k+:Merchant! v0.50b1 - Hermes II Online Game
This is basically Tradewars 2002 for a Macintosh Hermes
II BBS system. v0.50b1 is a total re-write of code over
previous versions. This means it is bugless, and has an
extremely high open-ness for new enhancements. Some new
features can be found here, too.
<Author - Delphic_Software@delphic.com>
Import Plus 2.5.5 : 22k+:Generic Import Replacement
Import Plus is a replacement for the built-in
importation of the Generic Import file. It is
non-modal so that users may continue to log on to all
nodes while it is importing messages. You can also use
the computer with Hermes in the background. It does
not suffer from the bug that causes Hermes to lose
approximately 8-10% of all messages. Also makes
troubleshooting easier by saving trouble messages.
Shareware, Hermes II 1.0.1
<Author - Chris Owen: owenc@minerva.cis.yale.edu>
Othello 2.5.15 : 24k+:One or two player version of board game
Othello is a two person board game. You can also play
one person against the computer. (it is a pretty good
opponent I warn you) See the file 'Othello rules' for
details on the game itself. It is a very easy game to
learn, but will keep you interested if you have someone
good to play against. This version of it is completely
multi-node, including a simple message system that will
let you chat at you play someone. Keyware, Hermes II
<Author - Chris Owen: owenc@minerva.cis.yale.edu>
<Note, if you would like *YOUR* externals in this Mailing List, please
submit a special piece of internet email including the Hermes description.>

Are you speaking of a Fido -> Internet gateway? Do I know any? I believe
network 285 (or wherever Jim Redelfs is) of fido has a nicely setup
gateway.
To Chris Owen, you have his e-mail address, correct?

Jim's address is jim.redelfs@macnet.omahug.org.

The following is for the Hermes II mailing list:
Delphic Software is pleased to announce that all of our externals
(except for Merchant!) have been transferred to Nathan Nunn of
MacUnderground Tech.! This transfer was done in order to allow our
externals to be cared for as we wanted to do so, but were not able to as
we didn't have enough time or man power to do so. :-) Nathan is an
excellent external programmer (if you have ever seen his stuff you know
what I mean) and is dedicated to improving all of the externals being
transferred.
In addition, Nathan will be honoring all previous owners of our
externals and allowing free upgrades. New purchasers should contact
Nathan at his BBS, Euphoria: The Awakened Eye at 512-478-4086 or
512-474-1210. If you would like to purchase one of the externals being
transferred, the price is still the same, but the address is....

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at

possible. Thanks! Later...

Merchant! v0.50b1 was finally released by Delphic Software.
All registered users who wish to have their free upgrades should contact
Michael Marshburn of Delphic Software either at:
PUMA BBS - Aeolus/Delphic Software Support BBS - (909) 792-4902
<2 lines, both at 14.4 - Automatic Rollover>
Internet: Delphic_Software@delphic.com
He will check his records and follow "any procedure he wishes."
On to *my* review of the wonderful new upgrade:
Seems bugless, unlike previous versions of the external, much
faster, more efficient, and generally "worth buying." Previous versions
were plagued with mass amounts of bugs, inefficiencies, etc. This great
external is definitely worth checking out. Lots of fun with the TW-2002
theme.
Price was bumped back up to $20. Oh well. :)
Don't expect a quick reply over the next week or so, since Mike is taking a
trip out of town. Oh well. We'll just have to do. :P
I am going to send this new version up to macgifts (which then gets tossed
into the major Macintosh FTP sites). Look for it in the /comm/ hierarchies!

At this prompt:
Engage AutoPilot? [YES/No/Express] >
Number entry is allowed. When a number is entered, the external will just
do an unstoppable (besides log-off) flow of carriage returns. It does not
crash the BBS, but the only way to terminal this is to end the call.
The obvious solution would be to change the prompt-type or disallow
numerical entry (seeing that Y/N/E are the only entries required anyway).
Please fix this bug ASAP.

Import Plus 2.5.5
Error log is created for messages that can't be imported
Messages that can't be imported are saved to another file
Messages that can't be imported are are now saved by Import Plus. The
most common reason for this is that messages are for forums or subs that
don't exist or aren't marked as 'echos'. If Import Plus comes across these
type of messages it will create an entry in the log that tells how many
errors there were. It will also create a file called "Generic Import
Errors" that will have a complete list of the messages and which forum/sub
they were for. It will also create a file called "Generic (not proc
essed), which will contain the actual messages that could not be imported.
Once you have corrected the problems with the message bases you can rename
this file "Generic Import" and Import Plus will go ahead and try and import
them again.
Is this the best way to handle it? I don't run Tabby so I'm not sure
if this is the most useful way to do it.

We had a horribly violent hard drive crash Sunday, so those of you trying
to reach Euphoria BBS for MacUnderground Tech. externals will get no answer.
The hard drive could not be recovered so we lost the entire BBS. I've
ordered a replacement drive and will try to have things up once again as
soon as possible.

Major speed up of board updating
Somewhere along the way I screwed up the improvements I had made previously
in the updating of the board. This fixes it again. It speeds up the
updating by
a factor of 10.

The last Othello I sent out said 2.5.15 on the outside and still said
2.5.14 on the inside. I have a new on online here if anyone really wants
it but it really isn't a big deal so I won't bother all of you with it.

Yea right. There are hundreds and they change all the time.
